Air to Air Heat Pumps

How they work…

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat Home.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. The heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally, saving you on fuel costs and reducing harmful CO2 emissions.

Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house this process creates many benefits.

More often, air-to-air heat pumps are installed in smaller properties, because they can be used for cooling as well as heating, which is especially useful in warmer summers.

Benefits…

  • Can generate less CO2 than other, more conventional heating methods

  • Lower heating bills (especially when replacing older heating systems)

  • Cheaper than ground source heat pumps

  • Easier to install than ground source heat pumps (requires no invasive digging in your garden)

  • Can provide both central heating and hot water

  • Require minimal maintenance

  • Some types can be reversed and used for air conditioning during the summer

  • You may be entitled to RHI government funding (get paid for generating your own renewable energy)

  • More efficient – for every unit of electricity used by the heat pump, you receive 2-3 units of heat in return

  • Cheaper electricity tariffs can be used to lower the cost of electricity used to power the heat pump

Air to Water Heat Pumps

How they work…

An air-to-water heat pump transfers heat from the outside air to water, which heats your radiators or underfloor heating. It can also heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your hot taps, showers and baths.

Heat from the air is absorbed into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump, which raises the temperature and then transfers that heat to water. Air to water heat-pumps do not require the same installation effort as other heating systems. For example, installing a ground source heat pump requires geothermal drilling, whereas air to water heat-pumps are simply connected to an indoor heating system via insulated pipes.

Benefits…

  • Can be utilised all year round

  • Are typically less expensive to install, compared to other heating systems

  • Provide an unlimited source of heat (outside air)

  • Suitable for retro fit and new build applications, and in areas where space is limited

  • Reduce energy bills and improve energy classification of a building

  • Require minimal maintenance due to efficient design

Ground Source Heat Pumps

How they work…

Ground source heat pumps are ideal for homes which are far from the mains grid as there is minimal maintenance, and no fuel deliveries required. They also make an excellent choice for properties which are looking to lower their home carbon emissions, they are highly economical and efficient renewable solution even though than air source heat pumps. But need the correct property an scop being more challenging to install.

Benefits…

  • Reduce heating cost by 30-50% vs. oil or LPG

  • No need for planning permission

  • Virtually maintenance free & most come with 20 year or lifetime warranty

  • Lower your CO2, NOx and SOx emissions

  • Provide 100% of your heating and hot water

  • No fuel storage is required

  • SAP value efficiency of 320%

  • Integration with real time metering software

  • Highly marketable ‘eco’ credentials
